What is a Cat Cafe?
Cat Cafe's actually started in the 1990's in Japan and began opening in the US about 5 years ago. Most cat cafes (catfe) in the US are set up as an adoption model for rescue cats. Additionally, due to US Health Department Regulations, most catfe's are not full service restaurants or cafes, but offer a limited menu like coffee and snacks.
Think cozy, coffee, and cats....not sandwiches. It's really ALL about the cats.
Where are you located?
1602 W Northfield Blvd Suite 500
Murfreesboro, TN 37129
What is your phone number?
We have very limited staff to offer phone support. We believe all information for the cafe can be found on this site. If your question isn't answered here please send us an email to and we will respond asap.
What are your hours?
Do you take in, re-home or rescue cats?
No. Unfortunately, we get multiple request daily to take in cats. We are not a cat rescue but operating as a foster home for cats already vetted by our local rescue partners. We already have a waiting list of cats to come to the cafe.
If you have found a stray cat or kitten please do whatever you can to help it. If you can't help on your own, please reach out to one of PARTNERS, or search for a local rescue organization on petfinder.com. You can also post a visitor post on our Facebook page to try to find a home for a cat in need. You must indicate there is a vetting process and re-homing fee or the post will be removed. No "Free cat" posts will be allowed. There are a lot of bad people that will harm cats so do your best to protect them!
Please do everything you can to keep your commitment to a cat that you adopted. Don't move somewhere that doesn't allow you to keep them. Keep looking. Don't leave them. It's cruel and illegal. They are depending on you. Most rescues can not take in cats for re-homing.
Do I have to make a reservation?
Reservations are not required, but without one you may not get in; especially on the weekends. Walk-ins are accepted only when space is available. We have a 12 person maximum per hour. If you know when you want to come visit, book it to ensure you get in.
How much does it cost to visit? Why do I have to pay to pet cats? Does my purchase help support the cats?
We're honestly not sure why anyone thinks it should or could be free to operate the cat cafe. Like any business, we have to pay rent, utilities, payroll, and cover all of the expenses to care for the 15+ cats in our care. Your cover charge is the primary source of income that allows us to provide this service to the community. Our rates are $10 per hour/per person, plus tax. Every purchase you make directly supports the cats and 100% of the adoption fees go back to the rescue.
What is the adoption process/fee?
If you fall in love with a cat at Catfeine please notify a member of our staff. You will be directed to complete the online application for the rescue the cat belongs to. They will review your application and contact you directly, and determine if your application is approved or denied. Adoption fees are $85. The cats are fully vetted. The process can take anywhere from a few hours to a few days depending on your circumstances. Adopters with dogs and/or small children may require a home visit prior to approval to adopt.
When is the best time to visit?
That depends on what you hope to get out of your visit. Weekends are busiest, so you will likely have more people in your session than you would on a weekday. More people means less individual interaction with the cats. The cats are usually most active from around 11:00am-2:00pm and then again in the evenings...but we can't promise this will be the case when you visit because, well, they're cats... and they pretty much do what they want. Please note we can not control when cats sleep or hide.
What are the age requirements to visit?
The current minimum age requirement is 7 years old for the majority of our business hours.
We are currently trying all ages on Thursdays from 12-5pm. 1 adult per 2 children required.
Friday and Saturday evenings 6 pm to close are 18+ only.
No minors under the age of 13 will be allowed in the cat lounge without a parent or guardian. The parent or guardian must sign the waiver on behalf of the minor and check them in at the cafe. Any minor unattended by an adult must abide by the house rules or they will be asked to contact their parent or guardian to pick them up.
Are you hiring? How can I apply? What are your age/experience requirements?
We are not currently hiring.
How can I volunteer to help?
We can't say enough how much we appreciate your support. We will occasionally be utilizing volunteers through our rescue partners to support the cat lounge. Volunteer applications can be found here: VOLUNTEER At this time, volunteers must be at least 18 years of age, though we plan to offer a junior program at a later date.
Can I book a party at the cafe?
Absolutely, but there are certain guidelines we have had to implement to ensure the best environment for our cats and other guests.
You can review them here: PARTY GUIDELINES
Can I bring my cat (or a cat I found) to the cat cafe?
NOOOOO!!!! Please do not bring cats to the cafe! We will have plenty of kitties to entertain you, but unfortunately we can not allow cats be brought in to the cafe. It's not because we don't love ALL kitties, we just have very strict rules and guidelines to follow regarding vetting and socialization of our cats.
How can you have cats and serve food? Is it clean? Will there be cat hair in my food or coffee?
Those are great questions, and we assure you we have worked closely with the Health Department to ensure we meet all code requirements. For starters, we are not preparing or serving food at Catfeine. We offer for sale a limited menu of pre-packaged goodies Our self serve coffee bar offers a state of the art "super-automatic" coffee maker that will make your drink at the touch of a button. All drinks taken into the cat lounge will be in a cup with a lid. We promise...it will be clean, and the cats won't be stirring your coffee with their paws!
Will I be sipping coffee next to a litter box?
EW! No way! The cats have a separate area where they can get away if they need a break. Only our caregivers are allowed to enter. This is the area where they have enclosed litter boxes, completely away from the lounge and coffee shop areas.
We PROMISE to keep a super clean and healthy environment for both the cats and the humans!
Are there risks of being scratched or bitten by a cat?
Unfortunately, yes. Cats are animals with claws and teeth, and can sometimes be unpredictable even in the best of circumstances. We will make every effort, along with our rescue partners, to select cats that are social and happy to be around people, however we can not 100% eliminate your risk. You must agree to enter at your own risk and are required to sign a waiver before entering the cat lounge. Click HERE learn more about what to look for in a cat's body language to help minimize your risk.
Do you take toy/food/litter donations?
Absolutely, thank you so much! Donations are accepted on behalf of our rescue partners.
The cats at Catfeine eat Rachel Ray Nutrish dry and wet cat food. (Salmon/Chicken and Brown Rice). We can also accept other brands as well to pass along to the rescues.
We use Tidy cat Free and Clean litter, and any new toys are always welcomed! Sorry, we can not accept used toys or opened food.
You can view our Amazon Wish List to see other items we need frequently. They can be bought locally or through Amazon..in any size you'd like to provide. We appreciate your support!
